Éditions Surf Session (France)
Editorial Design
Editorial design work produced for Éditions Surf Session, the publishing branch of the historic French surf magazine founded in Biarritz in 1986.Across several independent commissions, I designed publications including the athlete biography Life is Bodyboard by three-time world champion Amaury Lavernhe, Skater’s Travel Guide Vol. 2, and a detailed folding map of nautical activities in Brittany.
Each project addressed a different readership and required its own hierarchy, pacing and navigation logic rather than a fixed graphic style.
PROJECT DELIVERABLES
• Long-form book layout and typography
• Parallel French and English edition design
• Information-dense travel guide structure
• Photo-driven sports biography layout
• Folding nautical map design
EDITORIAL APPROACH
The bodyboarding book focused on rhythm and image pacing, supporting photographic storytelling while maintaining typographic consistency between the French and English editions.
The skateboarding guide prioritised orientation and quick access to location-based information, organising dense practical content into clear modular layouts.
The nautical map required a different reading behaviour entirely, combining cartographic clarity, durability and compact folding format intended for real outdoor use.
OUTCOME
Together these projects demonstrate an adaptable editorial methodology: analysing the nature of the content first, then constructing an appropriate visual language rather than applying a predefined style.
